Tribute to Australian Congolese Abishay Djumapili

News has reached us that one of our Congolese families in Sydney has lost a son. Abishay Djumapili drowned in Lake Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, on Sunday, 12 January 2014. Abishay was the son of Isaac Bacirongo and Josephine Djumapili. Isaac and another son will return to DRC soon to pay last respects to Abishay, and to organise funeral arrangements.

GLAPD members who have visited the Manning Valley NSW as part of various initiatives welcoming African migrants and refugees may know Isaac, who has spoken at Taree Library about his Pygmy life. His memoirs are due to be published in Australia this year. Isaac plans to return to Taree March 18 and 19 to give more talks to several community groups and to participate in Taree Library’s “living library”.

Abishay Djumapili was 23 and passed away while visiting relatives in the DRC. He was born in the  town of Bukavu in the DRC on September 28, 1991, to Isaac and Josephine Djumapili. Abishay graduated from Merrylands High School NSW and was a student at Sydney’s Macquarie University. He was also a trainee pilot with a private license in aviation. Abishay was a beloved member of his community and could frequently be found leading various multicultural programs in Sydney.

Funeral arrangements will be held in the DR Congo. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to assist with the costs of getting some members of his family to Congo to assist with funeral arrangements and to pay their last respects to Abishay.
